A dolly is essentially a wheeled platform or cart on which the camera is mounted, allowing it to move smoothly in any direction. This technique is often used to create dynamic and fluid shots that add visual interest and enhance storytelling. I’d advise filmmakers to invest in dollies because the physical movement of the camera adds an element of realism and authenticity that can’t be replicated in post-production. The use of a dolly also allows for precise control over the framing and composition of each shot.

One of my favourite examples of dolly shots is the scene in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1990), where the camera on a dolly reveals a long, empty hallway while Travis Bickle becomes increasingly agitated during the call. The movement of the camera not only captures the intensity of his emotions, but also gives the audience a sense of being drawn into his disturbed state of mind.
