Pre-shoots are small-scale tests carried out to ensure that all elements of the production of commercial video, such as makeup, costumes, lighting, camera angles, and other components, are ready for the main shoot. Having a pre-shoot allows you to anticipate any potential challenges or obstacles that may arise during the actual filming process. It also provides an opportunity to fine-tune your creative vision and ensure that all technical aspects are in place. Taking the time to plan ahead can greatly increase efficiency and productivity on set, ultimately leading to a smoother and more successful production.

What is the difference between Pre-Shoot and Animatic?

When we talk about animatic, we are specifically talking about the shot and what we see on the screen. Pre-shoot includes testing the video production process, ways to solve problems on set and of course – scheduling. Things often don’t go to plan on set, and tools like pre-shoot can help keep your nervous system safe.

From my experience, big commercial projects require a pre-shoot. In 99% of cases, the client wants to be involved in the creation of the project, and believe me, it’s better to make edits at the pre-shoot stage than after the main footage has been shot.

That’s why I think pre-shot is a must for any commercial video:

  1. Technical Assurance: Cameras, lenses, lighting – test them all. Resolve glitches and find optimal setups, ensuring smooth capture on set.
  2. Creative Confidence: Experiment with coverage, lensing, and performance. This early feedback loop refines your artistic direction and guarantees a polished final product.
  3. Team Optimization: Rehearse workflows, address crew needs, and iron out logistical hurdles. A prepped team translates to a more efficient and productive set.
  4. Post-Production Streamlining: Choose efficient codecs like ProRes 422HQ for faster editing and implement a reliable backup system. This pre-planned workflow saves time and ensures data security.

Don’t gamble with chaos, pre-shoot your path to perfection! By eliminating unknowns and optimising your process, you pave the way for a polished production and a stress-free set experience.
